Sander van Doorn receives Silver Harp award 2011

March 03, 2011 (Utrecht, Netherlands) In a ceremony that took place on Thursday, the 3rd of March, 2011, Dutch artist and top ranking global DJ, Sander van Doorn was announced as the latest recipient of the prestigious Silver Harp Award at the Buma Harp Gala 2011 in Utrecht, Netherlands. It was handed out by Armin van Buuren, who received the Golden Harp award two years ago.

Due to his Australian 'Dusk Till Doorn' festival tour commitments, Sander could not attend the official ceremony, and therefore the award was presented to him at an earlier stage. Sander was surprised on a plane by Armin himself, dressed as a flight attendant.

'When Tiësto and Armin received the Harp Award, I thought it was really something.. so naturally I am really honoured to receive this award myself this year. Receiving it out of Armin's hands was obviously even a bigger surprise! It's truly an amazing day for me. Too bad my Australian tour is planned on this day as well, but fortunately my entire family and team are at the ceremony to do the honours.' says Sander van Doorn

"I created this song on the Chordboard beginning by starting with a performance preset on the Yamaha Motif CX8 keyboard, just trying to get some ideas, and the tempo was 103 bpm. I went to the Chordboard STAC and tried the Key of C and started to play the minor chords on the right side of the STAC. I went back and forth between several chords but gravitated to the D minor and A minor chords because for some reason they just sounded like the mood I wanted to be in, and then also bridging with the E minor chord for even more tension. After a couple of rounds with those chords, it was time to resolve from the minors in this key, and so I branched over to the left side of the chordboard playing the major chords and experimenting with that, and settling on going from A minor to F major, introducing a positive feel to it, and down to the C major and up to the G major, and finally to a B diminished to return to the original minor chord progression of ii, vi, iii.
Near the end of the song I brought all track volumes down and emphasized a sound called ELFIN DREAMS on the Yamaha, and just loved the way it took the song into a new dimension. I played the same chord progressions on these new harmonies (and melodies) but played them in a more fanciful way playing single notes (as shown on the vid) and taking advantage of what the sound had to offer. Some sounds sound WAY better played through the Chordboard STAC than they do on the regular keyboard, they just do, and vice versa as well. Some sounds sound ineffective on the STAC because they were not designed to be played that way (ie arpeggiated sounds, since the STAC already does that).
Overall, this song production is about 18 tracks of music and percussion, with a few of these tracks played on a regular keyboard (the Yamaha) and the remainder played on the Chordboard STAC. It took about 2 hours of music time, and 6 hours of mixing and engineering time. The Chordboard STAC significantly shortened the time to come up with 18 tracks.
One of the reasons I use the piano keyboard for parts of the song is that the piano keyboard is a different musical instrument and you can get the different sounds (playing styles) from using it. I use both the piano and the Chordboard. Some sound timbres are similar to those used by Daft Punk in Tron, but that is a coincidence, as I just love those saw wave sounds in the first place :)"

The Velvet Revolver guitarist took time out of his busy schedules to discuss movies, his favorite director right now and the work he's done on film soundtracks. He was also in town to promote Slasher Films, his new movie production venture with Rob Eric. The horror movie company was inspired by Slash's love of scary movies from the '60s and '70s and the guitarist shared a couple of his favorites during in the video above.

The Leidseplein/square turned upside down last week, when Armin van Buuren performed live from the Radio 538 "Thundertruck". The impressive performance was to promote the kick-off of "A State Of Trance", Armin van Buuren's radio show that airs every Friday from 22:00 to 00:00. Rumors about the flashmob were intercepted by various Armin-fans which resulted in a massive crowd. The result of this surprise was well received by many enthusiastic people.

Roland CR-78 vs Moog FreqBox (Solvent demonstration)

Hello my name is Solvent, and I like my electro funky.

This funky little setup consists of a Roland CR-78 drum machine, a Moogerfooger FreqBox VCO, with some help from an MFB Urzwerg analog sequencer, and Ableton Live.

The CR-78 and Urzwerg are synced to Ableton's midi clock. The CR-78 is going into the FreqBox's audio input. Initially you hear the dry CR-78, but then I fade the mix, from 100% source to 100% VCO. The FB's VCO pitch is being sequenced by the Urzwerg, while at the same time it is hard Sync'd to the CR-78's audio signal. Then I bring in a audio loop of the same CR-78, recorded into Ableton just a few minutes before.
